Carolina Photojournalism Workshop 2011

In late May, 27 journalism and communications students descended into the Uwharrie region of North Carolina for the Eighth Annual Carolina Photojournalism Workshop.

Our mission was simple: create a short film documenting the story of a local person, place or topic. Immediately upon entering the town of Badin, we began researching topics and phoning story subjects.

My contact brought me to the Community Inn, Stanly County’s homeless shelter. There, I met Chris Story, the shelter’s director.

Story seemed to have a heart for taking care of the local homeless population. It was difficult at first to gain the trust of the guests. Even more so when I took out my camera, but by my second night in Badin, I was sleeping among the guests at the shelter.

My video focuses on Story’s work at the shelter and the people who are put in his care.
