Police officers raided an Occupy Winston-Salem people’s forum on the lawn of city hall Monday night. The police removed a banner that read “We are the 99% Occupy Winston-Salem” from the site, saying it could be used as evidence for future charges.
Officers told the group that the sign violated a city ordinance that prevents large signs from being hung in December. The police admitted that there were no other ordinance violations at that time and departed.
This wasn’t the first time the Occupy group encountered the police. The group also received provocation from the WSPD the previous night during a similar demonstration.
Police raided the site the next morning, arresting a 20-year-old man for disorderly conduct.
